Welcome to my guide to Praia do Tonel beach in Sagres, one of the best surfing beaches in the Algarve.
Praia do Tonel is the first many visitors see of the Costa Vicentina, the wild, windswept western corner of the Algarve.
It’s very different to the sheltered beaches and busier towns further east in the Algarve. It has a dramatic beauty, enhanced by the constant roar of the Atlantic waves crashing on the shoreline.
I have visited this outstanding Sagres beach several times, enthralled by the exposed, end-of-the-continent feel of the place. My guide to Praia do Tonel includes information on its location, getting there, what to see and do there, and places to visit nearby. I hope you enjoy it too.
Why Visit Praia Do Tonel
Praia do Tonel is the first many people see of the stunning Costa Vicentina, the unspoilt south-western corner of the Algarve region.
It’s the best of the surfing beaches in Sagres, and indeed one of the best-known surfing beaches in Portugal. It’s renowned for its big Atlantic waves, which usually provide a constant long soundtrack to your visit.
It’s a beach with spectacular scenery, with some superb ochre cliffs and rock formations at one end of the beach.
Praia do Tonel also commands superb views, with the Fortaleza of Sagres in one direction. One of the most famous Portugal landmarks, the Cape St Vincent lighthouse, is two miles down the coast, atop a rugged wind-lashed cliff.
What To See and Do At Praia Do Tonel
One of the first things that will strike you about Praia do Tonel is its dramatic setting and scenery. There is a stark beauty about this corner of the Costa Vicentina. It’s endlessly buffeted and blasted by strong Atlantic winds and waves, standing firm against the constant onslaught of the elements.
We particularly love the ochre cliffs around Praia do Tonel. They are prominent in the northern corner of the beach, just behind the beach café. The rocks have been eroded by rainwater, which has carved hundreds of tiny channels into the rock. It’s a tiny taste of Arizona, with the thunderous soundtrack of the Atlantic.
The waves pounding the shore and cliffs of Praia do Tonel finish their long journey in style, intensely crashing their way onto the land. The never-ending cacophony they make is one of the things that most impressed us about this superb beach. Praia do Tonel is not the place for a quiet, intimate conversation – chances are you won’t be able to hear yourselves think, never mind speak.
The best way to enjoy the noise of Praia do Tonel is to take a walk along the beach. I found a flat rock which was perfect for resting on, closed my eyes and just focused on the blasting sound of the waves.
Many visit this stunning beach to surf Praia do Tonel. Conditions on the beach can vary – it is used by surf schools to coach relative beginners, but big waves are common, particularly in winter. There is an outcrop of rock in the middle of the beach, but smaller ones around it aren’t visible, so be wary of those.
Praia do Tonel faces slightly towards the south-west, so isn’t prone to quite the barrage of big waves from the north-west.
Whenever we have visited Praia do Tonel we have always stopped by at the café in the corner of the beach. They serve great snacks and small meals during the season (April to October), as well as coffee and the ubiquitous Sagres beer named after the nearby village.
Where Is Praia Do Tonel Beach
Praia do Tonel is just to the west of the village of Sagres, in the far west of the Algarve region of southern Portugal.
It’s one of the best places to stay in the Costa Vicentina (Vicentine Coast). This undeveloped area is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejo e Costa Vicentina. This area includes the Algarve coast north to Odeceixe, and the Alentejo coast across the provincial border to the north.
How To Get To Praia Do Tonel
The easiest way to get to Praia do Tonel – indeed, the whole Costa Vicentina region – is by car.
Sagres is the last outpost of the western Algarve public transport network. Trains run as far west as Lagos, and eight buses a day run from the bus station there to Sagres. The bus takes a circuitous route through some of the coastal villages, taking over an hour to reach Sagres.
Beyond Sagres, if you want to explore the Costa Vicentina, you’ll need a car. If you plan to venture north, there’s a bus a week from Vila do Bispo to Aljezur.

Places To Visit Near Praia Do Tonel Sagres
The Fortaleza in Sagres is on the headland immediately to the south of Praia do Tonel. This historic fortress has been suggested as the site of the ‘Navigation School’ of Prince Henry the Navigator. It may not have fulfilled this function, but Henry certainly spent time there and lived in the area.
Henry instigated many of Portugal’s early Voyages of Discovery. Local sailor Gil Eanes was one of the first, reaching Cape Bojador on the west African coast (in modern Western Sahara). Henry (Dom Infante Henrique) began this tradition which led to Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias sailing beyond the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean and beyond.
Sagres village has a small harbour and a larger, sheltered beach, Praia da Mareta, normally the busiest of the Sagres beaches. The next beach to the north-east, Praia do Rebollinhos, is popular with windsurfers.
The south-westernmost point of Europe, Cape St Vincent (Cabo de Sao Vicente) Lighthouse, is a short distance across the bay from Praia do Tonel. The headland was considered sacred in ancient times, and was the end of the known world. Nobody knew what lay beyond the Atlantic horizon, but the prospect filled many with fear. The lighthouse is an amazing place to watch the sunset like our ancient ancestors once did.
The Costa Vicentina coast to the north is breathtaking. This is a wild windswept coast, so the more developed, sheltered beaches of the Algarve to the east are better suited to families with kids.
The Costa Vicentina is wonderful for lovers of dramatic scenery, hikers and surfers. Two main paths on the Rota Vicentina network of paths run along the coast and inland. I’ve covered several stretches of the coastal Fishermen’s Trail, which is some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Europe.
We particularly recommend Praia do Amado, near the village of Carrapateira. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with ochre cliffs at one end and a backdrop of rolling green hills. It’s another of the top surf beaches in Portugal, and there is a surf school there for beginners.
There are more fantastic Costa Vicentina beaches to the north, including the stunning Praia da Amoreira and Praia da Odeceixe, the northernmost beach on the Algarve. Inland, we recommend the town of Aljezur, and further into the Algarve hinterland, the tiny spa town of Caldas de Monchique.
Many visitors to the Algarve opt to stay in Lagos, the furthest major town west. I’ve stayed there twice, and there are enough things to do in Lagos Portugal to convince me to do so again. The beaches around Lagos are up there with the best Algarve beaches, particularly Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo on the road south of the town to the Ponta da Piedade headland.
Lagos is quite the party town in season, though I’ve been visiting for over twenty years for the astounding scenery. The Ponta da Piedade (Point of Piety) is a labyrinth of grottoes and fairytale rock formations, and you can take a fantastic boat trip around them, and discover some hidden beaches there.
Lagos is also the last stop on the Algarve railway line. From there you can travel across the coast to Faro (and the region’s airport) and beyond. There are some exceptional beaches further east in the Algarve, and we strongly recommend Praia da Marinha near Alvor. This beach has some astounding rock formations, including sea stacks and arches.

Sagres Hotels And Hostels
There are plenty of great places to stay in Sagres, from a top-end pousada to hostels for surfers.
The Pousada de Sagres has an amazing cliff-top location overlooking the Praia da Mareta beach and Fortaleza. It’s also only a few minutes’ drive from Praia do Tonel, and an ideal base for exploring the Costa Vicentina.
If you’re travelling with kids, the Martinhal Sagres Family Resort is an excellent option. It’s close to the Martinhal beach, a couple of miles to the north of Praia do Tonel. The resort comprises a 5-star hotel and villas.
Memmo Baleeira is a fine 4-star hotel close to Sagres village, and a short drive or walk from Praia do Tonel.
Praia do Tonel – Final Thoughts
Praia do Tonel is a wonderful introduction to the Costa Vicentina. We adore this area, which we think of as the Wild West of Portugal, and it was the first beach on this part if the coast that we visited. A trip to Praia do Tonel and nearby Cape St Vincent is one of the best things to do on the Algarve – don’t miss it.
